Edward Clug is regarded as one of the most distinctive choreographers of our time, creating works for renowned companies and prestigious theatres around the world. Celebrated as a dramaturgically brilliant storyteller, he has been among the most sought-after contemporary choreographers for many years. His creations have been developed for institutions such as Stuttgart Ballet, Nederlands Dans Theater, Bolshoi Ballet Moscow, Vienna State Ballet, Ballett Zürich, and Ballett Dortmund, and his artistic achievements have been recognised with numerous awards.
As part of the Frei Art Festival 2025, this two-day intensive offers a rare opportunity to immerse yourself in his choreographic world.
Led by Aya Misaki — contemporary dancer, choreographer, and repetiteur for Edward Clug — the workshop begins with a dynamic warm-up designed to heighten body awareness, refine control, and develop a versatile movement vocabulary. Through guided exercises, participants will work on alignment, articulation, and the technical foundations that enable deeply expressive movement.
In the second half of each day, the focus shifts to Edward Clug’s repertoire. Aya Misaki will guide you through the textures, phrasing, and subtle details that define his choreographic language, offering insight into both the precision and poetic depth of his work. Participants will have the chance to embody his style directly, enriching not only their technical skills but also their interpretive range.
Aya Misaki brings unique expertise to this intensive. Born in Japan and based in The Hague, she was a member of Nederlands Dans Theater 2 from 2015 to 2018, performing works by an array of celebrated choreographers, including Edward Clug. Since 2018, she has worked internationally as a freelance artist and has staged Clug’s and Jiri Pokorny’s works at major theatres across Europe.
